Full Moon day in the month of August (Nikini according to Buddhist literature) is very important as it marks the first month completion of the Annual Spiritual Rains (Vassana) Retreat. Also it gives an opportunity to those who could not observe it last full moon day to observe post Spiritual Rains observances (pasu vassa).

Significances of Nikini (August) Full Moon Day:
- Full Moon Day that completes The First Month of The Three Months Retreat.
- Post Rainy Retreat Season (pasu vas) sojourn by Buddhist Monk.
- The Attainment of Arahantship by Buddha's Cheif Attendant, Venerable Ananda Maha Thera.
- Commencement of the First Buddhist Counsell (Sangayana).
- The Buddha on his 14th Rainy Season Preached Rahulovada Sutta to his son Rahula Thera, giving advice on meditation and listening attentively to that attained Arahantship at the end of the discourse.
- In Sri Lankan Buddhist History, laying of the foundation stone for Seruwila Chaitya and commencement to Nikini Perehera at Seruwila Raja Maha Viharaya.
- The final Randoli Perahera of Sri Dalada Maligawa will also parade in the streets of Kandy.
