Vap Full Moon Poya Day Special Chanting of Pathimokka and Monastic Rituals

Monks at Letchworth Dhamma Nikethanaya observed a special monastic customs to mark the end (Pavarana) to the Annual Vassana Rainy Retreat Season 2024. Monks also chanted the Pathimokka Desanava (the basic code of monastic discipline) and shared the merits and blessings with all those who supported the Vassana Season 2024.

Vap Full Moon Poya Day Special Monastic Rituals


Monks at Letchworth Dhamma Nikethanaya observed a special monastic customs to formally end this year vassana rainy retreat season on Vap (October) Full Moon Poya Day Thursday 17th October 2024.

Monks also chanted the Bhikkhu Pa?imokkha (The Bhikkhus' Code of Discipline) and share the merits with all those who supported this year vassana season.

This year Vassana Season was a great success as we did lots of spiritual activities such as Dhamma Dana Talks, Meditation Programmes, Retreats, Bodhi Pooja Blessings, Chanting Dhamma Chakkapavaththana Sutta and seth pirith (Protection Blessings) and offering dana.

Our final ceremony of Kathina will be held on Saturday 26th October at Letchworth Free Church Hall from 9AM

Significances of Vap (October) Full Moon Poya Day

  • Vap Poya marks the end of Vassana Season Three Months Rainy Retreat and beginning of Kathina Cheevara (Robe) Offering Month.
  • Higher Ordained Monks formally ends the retreat by doing a special Vinaya Kamma (Monastic Discipline performance).
  • Our lord Buddha arrived Sankassa pura by spending the seventh Vassana Season at heavenly abode of Tavatimsa and preached Abhidhamma (Higher Teachings) to Mother Deity (Matru Deva) and other Devas (celestial beings) and made Matru Deva (Mother Deity) attain Sptapanna (Stream enterer).
  • King Devanampiyatissa sent special delegation headed by one of his close relative Minister Maha Aritta to meet King Dharmasoka and request Bhikkhuni Arahat Sangamitta to send to Sri Lanka to establish the nuns order by giving the opportunity to Queen Anula and many other Sri Lankan women to be ordained.
  • The Future Buddha, Maitriya Bodhisatva entered the mookhood with a retinue of 500 followers.
  • First Sri Lankan Monk, Arahat Maha Aritta Thera for the first time, host a special monastic decipline chanting at Thuparamaya in Sri Lanka.
  • Arahat Sariputta Maha Thera was appointed as Chief Disciple among the wisest.
  • A sacred sapling of Bodhi Tree was placed in a golden bowl to sent to Sri Lanka.
